About Portland Stone

When you look at the rich heritage of British architecture, you see Portland Stone front and centre. The streetscapes of Bond Street, Pall Mall and Covent Garden Piazza are classic examples of Portland Stone's prevalence among London's many world-famous buildings.

Don’t think Portland Stone is only about resplendent buildings and monuments in London. Far from it. When a building requires prestige and gravitas, Portland Stone is used far and wide, both home and abroad. Belfast City Hall, Manchester Central Library and St John's College Oxford University count among numerous landmarks around Britain that are linked by their use of Portland Stone. Globally, Portland Stone adorns several eminent buildings, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Albion Stone has been supplying Portland Stone since 1927 and supplies dozens of new projects every year. Recently, we've seen significant growth in Portland Stone’s popularity for luxury residential developments. See our FAQs page for more information about Portland Stone’s unique presence in Britain’s heritage.

Is Portland Stone
Right for Your Home?

We realise Portland Stone isn’t for everyone. Is it right for you?

Historically, Portland Stone has been reserved for only the most high profile and high budget projects, with bricks or imported limestone used for low-cost buildings. However, since 2002 when Albion Stone massively increased Portland Stone reserves using innovative mining technology, it's become more available for luxury residences.

Over the years we've supplied Portland Stone for the residences of discerning individuals in areas such as Wentworth, St George’s Hill and Beaconsfield. Most aren't household names and their identities remain confidential. However, we're pleased to list Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Sultan of Brunei and Griff Rhys Jones OBE among our satisfied clients.

In addition to single-occupancy dwellings, we frequently supply Portland Stone for super-prime residential apartments where properties are valued in excess of £5m. These include the award-winning Ebury Square development in Belgravia, St Edmund’s Terrace in St John’s Wood and Lancelot Place opposite Harrods in Knightsbridge. In every case, Portland Stone by Albion was used to enhance the building’s prestige as only Portland Stone can.

Portland Stone
for Your Home?

More recently we supplied large quantities of Portland Stone for the Chelsea Barracks scheme which, with property values between £5m and £60m, is arguably the most exclusive residential development in the UK. As you'd expect, the people behind Chelsea Barracks know a thing or two about creating luxury residences for discerning clients. It's no surprise then, that they chose Portland Stone by Albion.

Here is what they say about Portland Stone, “known for both its easily recognisable and varied features and for its contribution to the character of the nation’s capital city … this stone is written into the city’s history books and will now adorn the walls of Chelsea Barracks.”  “Portland stone’s popularity amongst architects has transcended time and fashion, the reason for which lies in its unique physical properties.”

About Albion Stone

Albion Stone’s involvement in the Portland Stone industry stretches back to 1927. Harold Poultney, our MD’s grandfather, bought the company in 1955 and our quarrying operations began in 1979.

Our transition from quarrying to mining Portland Stone began in 2002, when the very first Portland Stone mine was opened.  This early innovation gave us the opportunity to perfect our mining techniques before we stopped quarrying in 2015.  It’s these two decades of Portland Stone mining experience, that enables us to comfortably balance simultaneous supply for several large scale projects with the guarantee that you’re buying the most environmentally sensitive natural stone available in the UK.
