Private House - Surrey

Portland Stone:
Jordans Basebed
Stonehills Whitbed

Scope of Project:
Landscaping works to the garden and garage, wine cellar and gym extension to the house

The project is predominantly external paving providing a beautiful landscape and a spectacular floating set of entrance stones.
The original house had been extensively remodelled in 2015 and incorporated Portland Stone both internally and externally. For this final phase of work the clients visited the mines and factory to select the stones and remained very actively involved in the design and the progress of the project.
The entrance steps were designed by the client in collaboration with our senior estimator, Darin and the rest of the team. He wanted them to appear as if they were floating, with lighting incorporated to enhance this illusion at night. Underground heating will ensure that the stone remains frost free without the need to use damaging de-icing salts.
The garden is divided into a number of intimate areas and the Stonehills Whitbed paving is a perfect foil for the dramatic planting and the magnificent swimming pool with a glass wall infinity edge.
New Portland Jordans Basebed sills were incorporated into the garage/gym and wine cellar extension to complement the existing building.

Private Villa - Spain

Portland Stone:
New Independent Whitbed
Grove Whitbed
Bowers Roach

Scope of Project:
Construction of a prestigious villa in Spain

Roach & Partners are a development company specialising in bespoke prestigious houses in Spain.

Their design philosophy requires the use of the highest quality materials which led them to consider the use of Portland stone for this project.

They inspected the range of Portland Stone during a visit to the Quarries and a number of Albion Stone’s completed projects including the British Library, Royal Horseguards Hotel and Portcullis House in London.

Albion Stone were able to supply the desired quality of finished product within the contract programme. The New Independent Whitbed specified for the main flooring provided the aesthetic qualities and character required for large areas of floor in a luxury development of this kind.

New Independent Whitbed was selected for 1860m² of flooring, 454 linear metres of stair treads and 1,300 linear metres of skirtings. Two fireplaces were also produced using New Independent Whitbed as well as the bath surrounds and bath steps. Independent Grove Whitbed was selected for internal wall tiling and Bowers Roach for feature panels on the external facades.

Private House - Australia

Whitbed Portland Stone

Scope of Project:
New build private residence

Albion Stone supplied ‘Portland Stone Australia’ with approximately 400m² of Portland Grove Whitbed for this prestigious residential project in Victoria, Australia.

The Architect, Woods Bagot were thrilled to secure this prestigious stone for a truly magnificent project. The house overlooks the esplanade and has spectacular ocean views.

The stone was installed using the stone clip system. Remato construction did an excellent job as this is their first experience using the system.

Private House - Chelsea

Portland Stone:

Whitbed Portland Stone

Scope of Project:

New build private residence & office

The project was a complex backland site with a number of planning restrictions. The brief was to create an imposing and interesting modern townhouse, making reference to the traditional London townhouse on the front elevation, whilst the rear elevation was required to incorporate brickwork and reference the traditional mews houses. In responding to this, they wanted to create a pared back minimal look but one which still contained cornices and architraves. There was a strong emphasis on proportion throughout. In order to further highlight the minimalist proportions, mouldings were stripped back to simple compositions and a new railing and design with hidden fixings created. The interior of the house needed to have the benefit of a three story glass stair well and in order to bring this into the language of the exterior it was clad with a Portland Stone brise soleil, the only example of which we know of. This involved flitching Portland Stone with metal in order to achieve the slender fins. There are two grades of Portland Stone which were chosen for their contrasting nature and detailed to make the most of their differences. The more rustic lower level being a nod to historical 'rustication'.
