Global warming is a fact. We need to take responsibility for reducing the carbon we produce to help protect our planet. We believe carefully managing Britain’s natural resources and reducing waste are important objectives for any responsible company.

Science shows us that the Earth is creating stone at an infinitely faster rate than we can ever extract it. This makes Natural Stone is an inexhaustible resource.

If using British, sustainable goods are important values for you, you’ll be delighted with the progress we’ve made since we put sustainability at the core of our operations back in 2002. Portland Stone by Albion has the lowest carbon footprint, is the most sustainable and the most environmentally sensitive natural stone in the country. You don’t have to take our word for it. We have the credentials to back it up.

In 2002 we embraced new technology to open the first ever mining operation for extracting Portland Stone. At the time, it took substantial investment and a huge leap of faith, but now, 20 years on, the industry has been transformed and benefits are vast. Mining, along with several other initiatives, has reduced the carbon footprint by over 50%. Equally importantly, we have significantly reduced the effects of Portland Stone extraction on the local community and the natural environment.

In 2013 we achieved the Environmental Management standard ISO 14001:2015 and the following year we were awarded an 'Excellent' rating for BES 6001, the Responsible Sourcing standard for Construction Products. These achievements, which are independently verified by professional assessment bodies, make us unique within the UK natural stone industry.

Our latest EPD (Environmental Performance Declaration) demonstrates that Portland Stone by Albion is 60% below the European average for natural stone extraction. We also have the lowest carbon footprint of all British natural stones, currently 34% lower (kgCo2/tonne) than the next best. But rather than sitting on our laurels, we're working towards making the operation as close to Carbon Neutral as possible by 2025.
